🌿 Bungawalbin Wildlife Retreat

A sanctuary for culture, country, and conservation

Welcome to Bungawalbin

Nestled within the ancient lands of the Bunjalung people, the Bungawalbin Wildlife Retreat sits in one of Australia’s most ecologically diverse landscapes. The retreat forms part of the Bungawalbin catchment, a 1300‑square‑kilometre mosaic of national parks, nature reserves, and conservation areas. This region has long been a place of healing — as the document notes, “The word Bungawalbin means, swamp with plants with bulbous roots,” a reference to the medicinal plants traditionally gathered here.

Sacred sites are scattered throughout the catchment, and the land carries the stories, knowledge, and custodianship of the Banjalang people.

A Landscape Shaped by Time

Following European invasion, the region was heavily logged for its prized cabinet timbers and later cleared for grazing and sugar cane. As you wrote, “Only 50 years after invasion the natural diversity of this region was severely and irreversibly depleted.” Yet despite this history, Bungawalbin remains a refuge of extraordinary biodiversity — a living reminder of the resilience of nature.

A Personal Journey of Stewardship

The retreat’s story took a new turn in 1987, when the current owner purchased the 100‑acre property. Although some selective clearing occurred, “the land remains very much as it was when I acquired it.” The homestead itself was crafted entirely from timber harvested on the property — a testament to sustainable living and deep connection to place.

Over the past 40 years, more than 1,000 native trees have been planted, including the beloved Red Cedar (Toona ciliata). Each planting has been part of a long‑term vision: restoring habitat, increasing biodiversity, and creating a safe haven for wildlife.

Where Climate and Country Meet

Bungawalbin is a land of contrasts — shaped by flooding, drought, bushfire, and frost, and influenced by both sub‑tropical and temperate climates. These extremes create challenges, but they also support an incredible range of flora and fauna.

The retreat stands as a living example of how thoughtful land management can help ecosystems recover and thrive, even in the face of environmental pressures.

A Place to Connect

The Bungawalbin Wildlife Retreat is more than a property — it is a sanctuary for nature, culture, and quiet renewal. It is a place where the past is honoured, the present is nurtured, and the future is being carefully restored, tree by tree.
